March 20, 1972 <br />The adjourned regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners for <br />Lee County, North Carolina, convened on Monday, March 20, 1972, in the <br />Commissioners' Room of the County Office Building, at the corner of Steele and <br />Wicker Streets in the City of Sanford. Those present were: Commissioners <br />William H. Cooper, J. Eugene Rogers, Perry White, Gordon A. Wicker, and <br />Franklin D. Wicker. None of the Commissioners was absent. <br />Chairman Franklin D. Wicker presided and the following business <br />was transacted: <br />Rev. Humphries of Shallow Well Christian Church gave the invocation. <br />There was a discussion about repairs to the roof at the Courthouse <br />and Mr. Hugh Brewer was requested to prepare specifications for the work <br />desired to be done. <br />The radio monitors for use by the Rural Fire Departments had <br />arrived and Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker moved that the sum of $1, 111. 50,_ be <br />appropriated from the Emergency and Contingency Fund to the Fund for Rural <br />Fire Departments for the purchase of said radio monitors. Commissioner <br />William H. Cooper seconded the motion and upon a roll call vote, Messrs. <br />Cooper, Rogers, White, Gordon Wicker and Frank Wicker all voted for the <br />motion and no one voted against it. <br />Commissioner William H. Cooper reported that he had been advised <br />that Mr. H. M. Jackson would donate five acres of land to go with the five acres <br />of land that Mr. P. K. Buchanan had indicated he would give to the County for the <br />establishment of a park. <br />The Chairman read a letter from Mr. David Hathaway, complaining <br />because the Tax Collector had garnisheed his wages,to.collect the taxes that he <br />owed the County. <br />Chairman Wicker advised the Board that they needed to appoint a Bi- <br />centennial Commission for Lee County. Commissioner Rogers suggested contacting <br />theDaughters of the American Revolution. Commissioner White suggested con- <br />tacting the Board of Directors of the Railroad House Historical Society. The <br />Chairman appointed Commissioners White and Rogers to approach and secure <br />nominations for a Commission to be submitted to the Board at a later date. <br />The Chairman reported that Dr. E.. C. Deibler and Mr. Fred <br />Lawrence have resigned as members of the Sanford Planning Board. Mr. <br />Lawrence's term would have expired June 30, 1972, and Dr. Deibler's would <br />have expired on June 30, 1973. <br />Chairman Wicker appointed Commissioners Gordon Wicker, Perry <br />White and William H. Cooper as a committee to find representatives who would <br />serve on this Planning Board. Chairman Wicker also designated Commissioner <br />'Cooper as the Board's representative to find out why County appointees are not <br />compensated in a like fashion as other members of the Planning Board. <br />
