~,Q~K ~ PACE r~. <br />There was a general discussion about the change in procedures <br />in handling mental patients due to the amendments by G. S. 122_61, <br />Commissioner William H. Cooper moved the adoption of the following <br />resolution which had been requested by the Lee County Farm Bureau: <br />WHEREAS, the high cost of producing tobacco, continued <br />cost-price squeeze and narrowing profit margin have forced <br />tobacco production into units that require increasing amounts of <br />cash to operate and forced the tobacco farmer to sell as early as <br />tobacco is ready for market in order to meet cash flow require- <br />ments, and <br />WHEREAS, the required use of hired labor that later goes <br />into tobacco processing, mechanical harvesting, the increased <br />use of bulk curing and loose leaf sales create the need for <br />tobacco to be marketed as soon as possible, and <br />, • WHEREAS, through plant breeding and cultural practices, <br />the maturity dates of tobacco from belt to belt has narrowed <br />during recent years which causes all areas to have tobacco ready <br />for market at about the same time, <br />THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lee County Board <br />of Commissioners requests the Industry-Wide Flue-Cured Tobacco <br />Marketing Committee to establish early openings in all belts when <br />tobacco is ready for sale and that the Committee proceed immediately <br />in working out the details of the schedule for the 1972 marketing <br />season. <br />Commissioner Gordon A. Wicke'r'seconded the motion and upon a <br />vote, it was unanimously adopted. <br />The Board directed the County Accountant to write Congressman David <br />Henderson to support the Revenue Sharing Bill (HR 14370) which will be voted on <br />Monday, May 8, 1972. <br />The Chairman reported he had received a letter from Mr. Sam Earley <br />and one from Dr. Lennox Baker concerning Mr. Earley's' visit to the Board last <br />month. <br />The written report of Mr. Nathan Crissman, Tax Collector, was <br />presented to the Board. <br />The written report of Mr. Tom Haislip was presented to the Board on <br />behalf of the Agricultural Extension Services. <br />The Chairman reported the next meeting of Region J was on May 2, 1972, <br />and the present outlook was for a $4, 411, 00 assessment on Lee County. <br />The .written- report of D._ F. Holder, Sheriff, on his monthly operations <br />was presented to the Board. <br />The ChaI-roman rmznorted he had received a quarterly audit report on the <br />operations of the Sanford ABC Board. <br />The Board unanimously resolved to appoint Commissioner J. Eugene <br />Rogers and Mr. Billy Ray Cameron as agents to dispose of the Plymouth automobile <br />
