The Chairman then recognized the following persons, all of <br />whom spoke on behalf of employing a County Manager. <br />Mr. P. K. Buchanan, Mr. Elwin Buchanan, who spoke <br />on behalf of the Downtown Merchants Association, . <br />Mr. Worth Pickard, Mr. Harold T. Makepeace, Mr.. <br />Douglas Wilkinson, Mr. Clyde Rhyne, Mr. William •B. <br />Joyce, Mr. Bryant R. Johnson, Mr. W. J. Brinn, Jr. <br />and Mr. William M. Holt, Jr. <br />Dr. Ben Brooks and Mr, Kenneth Brinson, Superintendent of <br />the Lee County and Sanford City School Administrative Units, appeared before the <br />Board and requested that the budget estimate be increased to provide additional <br />money in the current expense fund for maintenance of the, same level of programs <br />as conducted during the past year. After discussion, Commissioner Gordon A. <br />Wicker moved that the budget estimate be amended to increase the appropriation <br />for the current expense fund by $30, 000. 00, and to increase anticipated surplus <br />from prior collections by $30,000. 00. Commissioner Cooper seconded the motion <br />and upon a roll call vote, Messrs. Cooper, Rogers, White, G. Wicker and F. <br />Wicker all voted for it and no one voted against it. <br />Chairman Wicker requested the Superintendents to give the <br />y" <br />Board a report on merger activities on July-3,- 1972. <br />Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker moved that the Superintendent <br />of Building. and Grounds be authorized to'expend $35.0, 00 from-the.-,Building <br />Maintenance Fund for the purchase of an air-conditioning' unit to be installed in <br />the building used by the Social Services Department. <br />Commissioner White seconded the motion and upon a vote it was <br />unanimously adopted. <br />Mr. Hugh Brewer, Superintendent of Building and Grounds, was <br />authorized to solicit bids for repair of a roof at the Courthouse for the third <br />Monday in July, or as soon thereafter as is possible. The Superintendent of <br />Building and Grounds was authorized to lower the ceiling in the lobby of the <br />Courthouse. <br />The'-director of Civil Defense was authorized to move his office <br />from its present location to the old conference room. <br />Mr. E. M. -Underwood, Jr., Auditor, appeared before the Board <br />and discussed the budget estimate.. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner White, seconded by Commissioner <br />Cooper, it was RESOLVED to amend the budget estimate, by increasing the <br />appropriation to the County Library for $500. 00. ' Messrs. Cooper, Rogers, <br />White, G. Wicker and F. Wicker, all voted for it and no one voted against it. <br />The Board then considered the budget estimate and the follow- <br />ing action was taken. <br />
