r'AGI lip NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BYTHE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS FOR LEE COUNTY: Section 1. The Board of Commissioners for Lee County does hereby express its profound appreciation and commend MRS: MARGARET McDONALD ASCOUGH for her years of devoted and outstanding service to Lee County and its Department of Social Services. _ Section 2, Tliis resolution "'shall become a part of the public records of the August 71 1972, meeting, and a copy shall be duly certified by the Clerk for presentation to MRS. MARGARET McDONALD ASCOUGH. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker seconded the motion and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. Commissioner J. Eugene Rogers moved the adoption of the following resolution which.had been requested by the Lee County Farm Bureau: WHEREAS, the continuation of the policy of taxing farm land based on the value of its highest and best use or sales value will force the selling of productive farm land against the wishes of the owners, thereby accelerating the trend in the decline of the family farm, and WHEREAS, farm owners are not provided the incentive now and for the future to build, maintain, and improve buildings upon areas affected creating an undesirable countryside that portends rural and urban slums which, thereby, decreases the value of the tax base, and WHEREAS, the needs for food and fiber for the state and nation will not be met if this problem goes unsolved, and WHEREAS, there is a need to provide open spaces for ecological and recreational purposes, and WHEREAS, the necessary planning for future orderly development and use is critically needed in order that solid tax bases can be established and maintained, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of County Cozrunissioners of Lee County requests to whom it may concern that objective analysis be made of the classification, appraisal, valuation, assessment, and taxation of farmland in North Carolina and legislation enacted to prevent the forced conversion of farmland to other uses, to protect the investments made by farm owners over a period of years, to provide for the production of food and fiber now and in the future in areas nearby the centers of need and to assure equity in taxation and soundness of tax revenues to better serve the needs of the citizens of this county. Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker seconded the motion and upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. Commissioner William H. Cooper moved the adoption of the following resolution honoring Wesley Giles, who was National Runner-up in the Pitch, Hit and Throw Contest :
