r'AGI lip <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BYTHE <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS FOR LEE COUNTY: <br />Section 1. The Board of Commissioners for Lee <br />County does hereby express its profound appreciation <br />and commend MRS: MARGARET McDONALD ASCOUGH for <br />her years of devoted and outstanding service to Lee County <br />and its Department of Social Services. _ <br />Section 2, Tliis resolution "'shall become a part of the <br />public records of the August 71 1972, meeting, and a copy shall <br />be duly certified by the Clerk for presentation to MRS. MARGARET <br />McDONALD ASCOUGH. <br />Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker seconded the motion and upon a <br />vote it was unanimously adopted. <br />Commissioner J. Eugene Rogers moved the adoption of the following <br />resolution which.had been requested by the Lee County Farm Bureau: <br />WHEREAS, the continuation of the policy of taxing farm <br />land based on the value of its highest and best use or sales value <br />will force the selling of productive farm land against the wishes <br />of the owners, thereby accelerating the trend in the decline of the <br />family farm, and <br />WHEREAS, farm owners are not provided the incentive now and <br />for the future to build, maintain, and improve buildings upon <br />areas affected creating an undesirable countryside that portends <br />rural and urban slums which, thereby, decreases the value of the <br />tax base, and <br />WHEREAS, the needs for food and fiber for the state and <br />nation will not be met if this problem goes unsolved, and <br />WHEREAS, there is a need to provide open spaces for <br />ecological and recreational purposes, and <br />WHEREAS, the necessary planning for future orderly <br />development and use is critically needed in order that solid <br />tax bases can be established and maintained, <br />THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of County <br />Cozrunissioners of Lee County requests to whom it may concern <br />that objective analysis be made of the classification, appraisal, <br />valuation, assessment, and taxation of farmland in North Carolina <br />and legislation enacted to prevent the forced conversion of farmland to <br />other uses, to protect the investments made by farm owners over <br />a period of years, to provide for the production of food and fiber now <br />and in the future in areas nearby the centers of need and to assure <br />equity in taxation and soundness of tax revenues to better serve <br />the needs of the citizens of this county. <br />Commissioner Gordon A. Wicker seconded the motion and upon a <br />vote it was unanimously adopted. <br />Commissioner William H. Cooper moved the adoption of the following <br />resolution honoring Wesley Giles, who was National Runner-up in the Pitch, Hit <br />and Throw Contest : <br />
