Cooper moved that the transfer be <br />authorized. Commissioner J. Eugene Rogers seconded the motion. <br />During the discussion of the motion when it appeared that <br />County Auditor E. M. Underwood, Jr. stated that treating the <br />matters as Capital,Outlay Expenses did not present any <br />accounting problem both Commissioners withdrew the motion and <br />the second on the basis that no action need be taken. Superin- <br />tendent Brinson requested that the action be taken since he <br />was experiencing, difficulty and after further discussion <br />Commissioner J. Eugene Rogers moved -that the sum of $31,468 <br />be transferred from the item denominated as "Other Costs" in <br />the Capital Outlay Fund to the Current Expense Fund for <br />maintenance. Commissioner William H. Cooper seconded the <br />motion and upon roll call vote it was unanimously approved. <br />Messrs. Cooper, Rogers, Gordon A. Wicker and Franklin D. <br />Wicker voted for the motion and no one voted. against it. <br />Assistant Superintendent Ernest Atkinson explained <br />that the Board of Education had been under the impression that <br />they owned more land at the Warren Williams School site than <br />their deed actually covered and that a developer was in the <br />process of installing roads and cutting roads on a portion <br />of the land. 'Mr. Atkinson stated the Board of Education <br />desired to acquire this additional land and the cost would be <br />$2600.00. During the discussion of, the land site, Commissioner <br />Perry White joined the meeting and participated in the further <br />deliberations of the Board.' After lengthy discussion about <br />the land at Warren Williams School and also the possible <br />acquisition of additional land at W. B. Wicker School, Commissioner <br />William H. Cooper moved that consideration of this.item be <br />tabled. Commissioner J. Eugene Rogers seconded the motion and <br />upon a vote it was unanimously adopted. <br />Mr. William H. Ray, Chairman of the Lee County Board <br />of Elections, appeared before the Board at their request to <br />discuss voting machines. Mr. Ray advised the Board that the <br />Board of Elections desired to purchase two (2) additional <br />machines and that they preferred that all of the machines be <br />of the same type. County Manager Robert Harris, advised the <br />Board that a demonstration of voting machines would be made <br />at a later date for their consideration. <br />Mr. Gerald Shaw, Attorney at Law, appeared before <br />the Board-and presented a petition on behalf of Harry Thomas <br />Lumber Company requesting the closing of a portion of Gunter <br />street. Commissioner J. Eugene Rogers moved the adoption of <br />the following resolution: <br />WHEREAS Harry Thomas Lumber Company, as the abutting <br />property owner on both sides of a certain portion of Gunter <br />Street to which reference is hereinafter made, has petitioned <br />the Board of County Commissioners to close that portion of <br />Gunter Street running northwardly from the intersection of <br />Gunter Street and Winfield Street and abutting Lots Nos. 1 <br />through 14 of Block 5 and Block 1 as shown on map recorded in <br />Map Book 3, page 111, Lee County Registry; and whereas the <br />provisions of G S. 153-9 (17) require that notice of the <br />meeting at which the closing of said street is to be acted <br />upon shall be published once a week for four weeks in some <br />newspaper published.in the county and whereas it is necessary <br />that the Board of County Commissioners fix a time for the <br />hearing in order that proper notice can be given; <br />NOW,. ` OEREFORE, it is <br />RESOLVED that October 16, 1972, at 10;00 o'clock a.m. <br />be and the same is hereby designated at the time and the <br />regular meeting room of the Commissioners is designated as <br />the place for the hearing on the petition required by G. S. <br />153-.9 (17). <br />
