BK -00027 PG:0515 <br />Familv Promise of Lee County, requested $5,000, County Manager recommended <br />$2,500. Fredrika Cooke, Executive Director stated the mission of Family Promise of Lee County is to <br />provide homeless families with shelter and meals and comprehensive, compassionate support services <br />that will enable them to transition from homelessness to stable affordable housing. Any funding <br />received from the County will be used for case management and support services to homeless children <br />and their parents. Staff will assist each family with developing a case management plan, which <br />includes goals that range from 7 days to 12 months. <br />Johnston -Lee -Harnett Community Action, requested $6,000, County Manager did not <br />recommend any funding. Marie Watson, Executive Director stated their mission is to work with low <br />income persons by using coordinated efforts and representation from the disadvantaged, public and <br />private sectors to help persons become self-sufficient. Any funds received from the County will be used <br />to offset expenses where program funds are unavailable or not part of a line item. Funds are also used <br />to assist clients when funds are unavailable. <br />Magpie's Outreach Community Economic Development Center, requested $15,000, <br />County Manager recommended $2,500. Ophelia Ray, CEO and Founder stated their mission is to <br />improve the academic achievement, self-esteem and social competence of at -risk youth. Any funding <br />received from the County will be used to purchase a 15 -passenger vehicle to provide transportation to <br />youth referred from the Lee County Court System to Maggie's Outreach Youth Enrichment Center <br />"Road to Success" mentoring program. <br />The Salvation Army of Lee County, requested $20,000, County Manager recommended <br />$2,500. Chris Kelley, Service Center Director stated their mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus <br />Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Any funding received will be used <br />to assist people in breaking the cycle of poverty and help them become self-sufficient and productive <br />members of the community. The organization would like to establish Individual Development Accounts <br />(IDA's) for low income people in Lee County which is a matched savings account that will help low- <br />income workers build financial assets for the purchase of a home, pursuit of post -secondary education <br />or specialized training, or start or expand a small business. <br />Temple Theatre Company Inc., requested $28,760, County Manager recommended <br />$5,000. Peggy Taphorn, Director, stated their mission is to entertain, enrich, enlighten, and educate <br />audiences of Central North Carolina through the art of live theatre. Any funding received will be used to <br />enhance the Temple's youth programs, with the primary focus being on upgrading the facilities <br />(especially the Education building located at 126 Carthage Street). <br />Lee County Arts Council Inc., requested $3,000, County Manager recommended <br />$2,000. Lorraine Fera, Director, stated the Arts Council believes that art is good business with three <br />primary goals; (1) enable local artists to bring their work to the public through grants, free/low cost <br />public events and local exhibits/community events; (2) bring music, dance, poetry, painting and <br />sculpture of local artists to the citizens of Lee County at low/no costs through events and exhibits, and <br />(3) to give local artists a market for their work. Any funding received will be used to revive the pottery <br />industry in Lee County and fund more classes both for students and adults interested in learning to <br />create traditional pottery. <br />The Board considered a Resolution naming a portion of the US 421 By -Pass in memory of Don <br />Buie.
