B K 00026 PG:1017
Observing the front facade of our building that was decaying due to the weather, we
sought the assistance of General Services. The Director again came to our aid with funds to
repair the woodwork and cover the wood with vinyl siding. This has made a tremendous
difference to the front of the Center, which makes a more favorable impression to visitors.
Recently General Services worked with us to install a waterline to our community
gardens. With the combining of funds, a water line and hydrant were installed under their
supervision. This addition has helped our organic demonstration garden to flourish. It has also
eliminated participants from dragging heavy hoses, across the sidewalk and parking lot. Safety
concerns were eliminated.
Routine maintenance of inside and outside and emergency lighting, troubleshooting the
building's security system, plumbing, electrical and HVAC issues are task that are quickly
addressed when troubles arise. During inclement weather the maintenance staff is out early in
the morning removing the wintery mix from the drive, parking lot and sidewalks. Salt is applied
allowing for safe access to the building.
The Grounds Division of General Services takes pride and responsibility in assuring an
attractive outside appearance for the McSwain Center. During the year the grounds crews are
busy with weekly cutting and general maintenance of the lawn and plantings surrounding the
Center. They have worked with our Master Gardner Volunteers and Horticulture program to
provide plants, pine straw and mulch used to maintain the landscape and demonstration
gardens. The crew has also removed dying trees and shrubs.
General Services has assigned one housekeeper to our facility. She is responsible for the
overall custodial maintenance for the Center. She cheerfully greets staff and visitors when they
enter the building and is most willing to assist when called upon. Using a cleaning schedule she
makes sure the floors are mopped and buffed to a shine, carpet is vacuumed, and the
auditorium is clean, orderly and ready for the next event.
