BK - 00026 PG - 1016
Cooperative Extension Service County Partnership Award Application
Sponsored by
NC Cooperative Extension Service Foundation
Lee County Award Application - July 2014
Commitment of Resources
Lee County General Services works diligently to ensure that the McSwain Extension
Education and Agriculture Center is a safe and professional atmosphere in which to conduct
county business and to provide a one -stop shop of services for our agriculture
community. Located away from other County facilities, the Center could easily be "out of sight,
out of mind" when it comes to maintenance and upkeep. Our General Services Director and his
staff are committed to keeping the McSwain Center as a showplace for the County of Lee.
We have been in our "new" facility for fourteen years and not a month goes by when we
don't hear how nice and well maintained the facility is. The McSwain Center, a county facility,
sits on 12 acres owned by the Agriculture Foundation at NC State University. Lee County has a
99 -year lease agreement with the Foundation. County Commissioners provided funding for the
facility with local citizens also raising funds. Our General Services Department was instrumental
in the building process and has supported us with the day -to -day maintenance and upkeep of
the facility.
General Services works with Extension staff to assure the facility meets all federal, state
and local regulations pertaining to building and safety codes, maintains the HVAC and electrical
systems, and provides renovations. When a main water valve failed in our auditorium and over
90% of the Center was flooded in the middle of the night, our County maintenance staff and
housekeepers were quick to mobilize, salvage furniture, removed the water and brought in a
professional mold and mildew remediation team to dry the walls and replace the coving and
sheetrock where needed. With General Services' due diligent, the facility was dried out within
the week, the damage repaired in the auditorium and a dinner program for over 120 participants
was held on scheduled.
