highschool for the'merged system would be available and that inflation and the rising cost of construction had already cost the county some of its buying power. Commissioner Wicker stated he was for approving the county's proposal at the present time. Commissioner J. Eugene Rogers stated that he generally approved of the county school board's proposal except for two items but that he was of the opinion that merger alone would not make the two systems equal. Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker criticized the request of the Sanford City Board of Education for transferring capital.outlay funds to current expenses during this fiscal year and about the size and nature of the administrative expenses for operating said district. Commissioner wicker further stated he did not appreciate the remarks made by the representatives of the Sanford City Board of Education to the press about the refusal of the Board to purchase lots in a subdivision adjoining the Warren Williams School site. Commissioner Franklin,.D. Wicker then moved the adoption of the following resolution:, RESOLVED, that the Lee County Board of commissioners,. hereby expresses whole-hearted support for the school merger proposal made by the Lee County Board of Education at its December 1st meeting and views this proposal as an effective and workable means of achieving equal educat-lonal opportunity fort.. all the children in the county. This resolution is not~to bey.. construed as expressing opposition to rather acceptable means of merging the two school districts into one. Commissioner Hal L. Hancock seconded the motion. Upon the motion Commissioner Cooper stated he thought this.action was premature since the Board had not received any comment ;or proposal from the Sanford City Board of Education. Commissioner Rogers also expressed the opinion that he thought this action was premature. Commissioner Wicker stated that he would withdraw,his motion if the Chairman would call or arrange.a meeting with the City School Board for Friday of this week. Commissioner Hancock agreed with this proposal and.stated he would withdraw his second. Upon the Chairman's statement, he would arrange such, a meeting, the motion was withdrawn, The Chairman stated he had received an inquiry from i Mr. H. M. Jackson to see if the Board was interested in selling the Helen Holder property on Elm Street. The Board advised the Chairman to inform Mr. Jackson that they did not desire'..to sell. this property. Upon motion of Commissioner Franklin D..Wicker, seconded by Commissioner William H. Cooper and unanimously adopted upon,.. a-vote, it was resolved to adjourn the meeting until Friday, . December 22, 1972 at 2:30 o'clock p.m. to meet at the District Court Room on the first floor of the Lee County Courthouse Building in Sanford, North Carolina.
