r <br />Chairman Wicker stated that the County School Board had sent him <br />a letter in which it re-affirmed its position with respect to its proposal for <br />merger as outlined in their proposal adopted on December 1st, 1972. <br />Chairman Gordon A. Wicker reported that Mr. Robert Henshaw, <br />of the Central Field Office of the Department of Natural and Economic Resources <br />had written him and advised that his preliminary. survey will be furnished to the <br />Board on January 15, 1973. <br />Chairman Wicker had the Clerk read a letter from Mr. Van R. <br />Groce to Mr. Fred Beck, District Engineer, State Highway Commission, with <br />respect to the roads in the Carr Creek Subdivision. <br />The Board next proceeded to open bids received for the construction <br />of two trenches at the Sanitary Landfill. All of the bids exceeded the County's <br />expectations and all were rejected. Upon motion of Commissioner Cooper, <br />seconded by Commissioner Hancock, it was resolved to employ N: C. Beal & <br />Sons, to construct one trench at the rate of 44~ per cubic yard. Commissioner <br />Hancock seconded the motion and upon a roll call vote, it was unanimously adopted, <br />as follows: <br />Aye: Cooper, Hancock, Rogers, F. Wicker and G. Wicker <br />Nay: None <br />The District meeting of the North Carolina Association of County <br />Commissioners will be held on January 18th, and a discussion was held to see <br />if representatives could be sent on behalf of the Board. <br />There was a discussion with Mr. Hugh Brewer about the state of <br />construction of the building at the Sanitary Landfill. <br />Chairman Wicker read a letter from Judge Maurice Braswell about <br />the repairs needed to the Superior Court Courtroom and the second floor of the <br />Courthouse. <br />There was a discussion about the meeting to be held by the Sanford <br />Chamber of Commerce at Wrightsville Beach and apparently the only definite <br />commitment could be made was that Commissioner Hancock expected to attend. <br />Chairman Gordon A. Wicker asked if the Board desired to make <br />any disposition, of the New Hope School property. Commissioner J. Eugene <br />Rogers requested that consideration of -this matter be deferred to a later date <br />and in accordance with his request, no action was taken. <br />The Board again discussed the Landfill and directed that Mr. Hugh <br />Brewer secure the necessary bids for the installation of a well at the Landfill <br />site. . <br />The-Board also directed the Committee appointed to make repairs <br />at the. Courthouse to.formulate a:plan for consideration by the Board of Commission <br />Mr. James Clark presented a' written request on behalf of Mrs. <br />Ava H. Ayers fora refund for overpayment, of taxes, it appearing that Mrs. Ayers <br />land had been assessed on a basis of 52 front feet when the fact it only has a 50 foot <br />front and this lfas resulted in an over assessment of $12;36. Upon motion of <br />Commissioner Cooper, seconded by' Commissioner Franklin D. Wicker, it was . <br />resolved to refund Mrs. Ava H. Ayers the sum of $12. 36. The motion was <br />adopted by unanimous vote as follows: <br />
