Commissioner Wicker moved the adoption of the following resolution: WHEREAS, tobacco farmers throughout the Flue-Cured marketing area.have suffered serious financial losses as a .result of the chaotic marketing conditions and extremely low price being paid by the tobacco companies, and WHEREAS, the marketing situation has deteriorated to such an extent that it is necessary for a thorough investigation to be conducted into all aspects of marketing and selling of tobacco, and WHEREAS, this deterioration cuts. across country and state boundaries and therefore requires a federal.as well as state investi- gation, and WHEREAS,.it is crucial to county govern- ment throughout North Carolina to insure. that the farmer is treated fairly in the marketplace, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Commissioners for Lee County go on record as requesting that all necessary steps, including a thorough investigation, be taken by the.appropriate state and federal agencies to insure that never again can such chaotic conditions be allowed to happen in the marketing of tobacco. Commissioner Hal L. Hancock seconded the motion and upon a vote, it was unanimously adopted. Chairman Gordon A. Wicker brought up for discussion the establishment of a metro government for Sanford, Broadway, and Lee County. After discussion, Commissioner Cooper moved that the Board of Commissioners go on record.as favoring the establishment of metro government which would combine local government for Sanford, Broadway, and Lee County; and that the Chairman of the Board be authorized to appoint a committee to work for the establishment of such a form of government. Commissioner Rogers seconded the motion. Messrs. Cooper, Hancock, Rogers, F. Wicker, and G. Wicker all voted for.it.
