A. <br />_ Information <br />Meeting Date: October 6, 2014 XX Action Item <br />Consent Agenda <br />SUBJECT Second Reading for Resolution to Modify Ordinance Concerning <br />Handguns on County Property <br />DEPARTMENT <br />CONTACT PERSON <br />Governing Body <br />Commissioner Kirk Smith <br />REQUEST Consider modifying those portions of Chapter Two of the Lee County <br />Code of Ordinances concerning concealed firearms. <br />SUMMARY Section 2 -31 of the Code of Ordinances prohibits concealed <br />handguns on County property. Commissioner Smith has asked that the Board consider modifying <br />such code sections to allow permitted concealed handguns on County property and in county <br />buildings. <br />A second reading of the Ordinance is required prior to its passage. <br />BUDGET IMPACT N/A <br />ATTACHMENT(S) (1) Resolution <br />(2) County Ordinance Section 2 -31 <br />PUBLIC HEARING No <br />PRIOR BOARD ACTION Discussed at August 4th meeting, and first reading approved at <br />September 8t meeting. <br />RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends that if the Commissioners allow concealed carry of <br />handguns, with a proper permit, on County property, rules be put in place that clearly notify the <br />public that conceal carry by permit is allowed. It is further recommended that the carrying of all <br />other weapons and /or guns, including open carry, be prohibited by ordinance and posted as such. <br />Also, there will be limitations to the location where the public and employees can carry a properly <br />permitted concealed handgun. The Courthouse, McSwain Center and General Services are <br />locations that concealed carry will not be allowed. <br />
