X06
• ,COIN'`
H CARRY
Lee County
Juvenile Crime
Prevention Council
Memorandum
Date: June 9. 2009
To: John Crumpton
County Manager
From: Roger Judd
Chair - Juve' e Crime Prevention Council
t
B ~t .
V~ a ile Crime Prevention Council
Re: No Klatch - Gang Violence Prevention and Intervention Grant
This morning some members of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) met with a
representative from the Lee County School's GREAT Program, the Boys and Girls Club and
Juvenile Justice, to discuss a federal grant being offered to enable the county to conduct a
comprehensive gang assessment to seek a clear and concise understanding of the local risk
factors for delinquency and gang involvement. It is our understanding that both the Lee County
Sheriff's office and the Sanford City Police have done self-assessments and they clearly show
numbers that indicate that Lee County does have a problem with gangs; not to mention the fact
that the juvenile court counselors have advised its that Lee County has more of a gang problem
that our co-counties Harnett and Johnston.
This same grant offers the opportunity to enhance existing efforts being made in the schools with
their Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T) program. The G.R.E.A.T. program
is intended to provide life skills that empower adolescents with the ability to resist peer pressure
to join gangs. Locally the school's Resource Officers work with the children in certain age
groups and families around gang prevention.
Lee County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council
P. O. Box 57
Sanford, North Carolina 27331
Chair - Roger Judd
