Training
076
To serve Lee County to the best of our ability, I am pleased to report that we have completed
• the following training. Lee County Forest Ranger, Mark Luellen, Assistant Lee County
Forest Ranger, Sam Buchanan, and Forest Fire Equipment Operator, Robert Thomas, have
received fire line refresher training. Luellen and Buchanan have received pesticide license
training credits in the area of forest pest control. Luellen and Thomas have also received
training on managing multiple generations in the work place and on railroad crossing safety.
Luellen has also received additional training on bark beetles, insect and disease issues, forest
fertilization, and hardwood management. Thomas has also served as an instructor and coach
to several of our Division's newer Forest Fire Equipment Operators. Buchanan also served as
a coach to another employee while serving as an engine boss on the Evans Road fire.
Disaster Response
This past year, the Evans Road fire in eastern North Carolina required a lot of work from the
NC Division of Forest Resources. Lee County Forest Ranger, Mark Luellen, worked as a
safety officer on this fire from July 2nd to 1P, 2008. Forest Fire Equipment Operator, Robert
Thomas, served as a Forest Fire Equipment Operator on the Evans Road Fire from June 14'h
to 25`h, 2008. Assistant County Ranger, Sam Buchanan, served as an engine boss on this fire
from June 25th to July 6'h, 2008 and as a division supervisor from July 22nd to August 2"d,
2008.
Conclusion
I would like to say that we greatly appreciate the interest and support of the Lee County
Commissioners. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (919)
775-5214.
Sincerely,
Mark Luellen
Lee County Forest Ranger
1400 Fire Tower Road
Sanford, NC 27330
0
