• Assisted ] I landowners with planting trees on 280 acres. We also assisted another 0 75
landowner in replanting a 5-acre area that needed additional seedlings after being planted
last year. According to the North Carolina Forestry Association, many investment
• analysts consider reforestation to be one of the best long-term investments available to
landowners.
Assisted 7 landowners in identifying 30 acres of desirable natural reforestation resulting
from natural seed sources. Our tract examinations and seedling counts saved these
landowners the expense of tree planting.
Assisted 3 landowners in having pre-commercial thinnings done on 51 acres of pine
stands. Assisted 2 additional landowners in getting 226 acres of their pine stands control
burned.
• The Division of Forest Resources provides technical assistance and helps landowners
receive cost-sharing assistance through several programs. We have helped 8 landowners
to receive approximately $12,475 in North Carolina's Forest Development (FDP) cost-
sharing funds. This cost-share program reimburses landowners for 40% to 60% of
certain reforestation and timber stand improvement expenses. We helped four
landowners to receive approximately $4,485 in assistance from North Carolina's Southern
Pine Beetle Prevention Program that helps landowners with about 70% of their expense
in pre-commercially thinning qualifying young pine stands and about 40% of their
reforestation costs. We have also assisted one landowner in receiving approximately
$672 from the federal government's Forest Land Enhancement Program (FLEP) which
assisted him with some in-stand burning.
r • Made 37 inspections on timber harvesting projects and 9 additional inspections on
reforestation and forestry projects, which involved soil-disturbing forestry practices and
forestry herbicide use, to ensure their compliance with North Carolina's Sedimentation
Law. These 46 inspections involved some 654 acres.
• Good forestry was promoted in l8 programs given to students and other groups.
Lee County benefits from the NC Division of Forest Resources' Jordan Lake
Educational State Forest located in Chatham County. It is projected that 280 students
from Lee County will attend classes at Jordan Lake Educational State Forest this year.
Pest Control
Forest insects and diseases can be more devastating to our forests than fire. As we work in
Lee County, we remain alert to forest diseases or insects. Fortunately, there have not been
any significant insect or disease problems this past year. Since July Is` 2008, we have
responded to twenty (20) pest control requests by landowners concerning various tree
problems.
•
